Speakers from the Manganese Industry, other Metal Consortia, European Metal Associations and Regulatory Experts will enlighten you on the short-term risks/threats on your businesses as well as your responsibilities under the Evaluation aspect of EU REACH
New classification for Manganese Ores, reduced; Ferromanganese Slags; Silicomanganese slags
ECHA's request for an OECD 414 - Prenatal developmental toxicity study in rabbit for FeMn slag (the most bioavailable of the UVCB's) resulted in a classifcation for developmental toxicity. Although the same study in the rats did not show any effects at the highest allowable dose of 1000mg/kg/day, the contrary was observed in rabbits. In rabbits, foetal abnormalities were seen at all treated groups including the lowest dose of 100mg/kg/day leading to a classifction of Repro catergory 2 (H361) for developmental toxicity.
Considering that all there substances are analogues, this classifciation will be readacross Ferromanganese slags (FeMn slags) to Manganese ores, reduced ( Sinter ore) and Silicomanganese slags ( SiMn slags) and eSDS's will be required for all registrants placing these substances on the EU market.
The classification emanating from this study will trigger the following on the eSDS as a must:
Classification |
Reproductive toxicity Category 2 |
Pictogram |
GHS08 |
Signal word |
Warning |
Hazard statement |
H361d Suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child). |
Precautionary statement Prevention |
P201 Obtain special instructions before use. P202 Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood. P280 Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection |
Precautionary statement Response |

For the above reason, all three registration dossiers will be updated accordingly this year.
